The role: Network Transport Engineer, Operations
As a Network Transport Engineer for the Production Networking team, you will work with network architects and other network engineers and teams in Google to ensure the smooth operation of our optical networking platforms on the Google production network. You will also work closely with the deployment engineers to review service information from the field and compare against expected results. The objective of the Network Transport Engineering group is to maintain the most reliable and cost-effective optical network with an eye to the future to meet Google's demanding growth in this area.
Responsibilities:
- Install and maintain operational support systems for optical network elements. Develop automation tools for testing, configuration, auditing and monitoring of fault and performance of optical network elements.
- Work as second line support for all optical issues across the global network of all production installed transport devices - includes on-call rotation duties.
- Work with HW and SW of various optical platforms from pre-deployment certification to installation acceptance.
- Review network documentation and databasing. Publish and validate method of procedure (MOPs) for installation and continued operation of the optical network elements.
- Analyze the build and operation performance of our optical gear to expected results. Publish failure analysis and make sparing recommendations.
Requirements:
- BS in a technical discipline or equivalent experience with at least 3 years of experience with optical network installation, maintenance and operation for service providers or large enterprise networks required.
- Background and experience with server system operations and administration highly desirable.
- Experience and desire to do scripting/programming required. Python knowledge a plus.
- Broad understanding of optical theory and transport technologies and the operation of optical transport DWDM systems required with field work experience in POPs, carrier hotels, data centers and Central Office environments highly desirable.
- Familiarity with TL1, SNMP and/or Element Management Systems required.
- Solid optical troubleshooting skills using OTDR, OSA, BERT and optical power meters required.
- Excellent written/verbal communication skills required.
