Operational Risk Controller – FICC recruitment
Operational Risk Control was established in 2005 to develop and implement an Operational Risk Framework (ORF) in UBS globally. ORC is a global organization with representation in the Americas, EMEA and APAC. Its structure consists of global business aligned and function-aligned controllers who have global and regional reporting lines. Product controllers have responsibility for front-to-back understanding and coverage of specific products in the FICC, Equity and IBD areas, while Functional controllers have cross-product responsibility in areas such as Credit, Market Risk, Finance, IT and Operations. ORC also includes a central support team based in Zurich, London and India which provides global support to the team (e.g., MIS reporting). Reporting lines ultimately roll up to the Global Head of ORC for UBS.
This position is part of the IB Business-Aligned FICC ORC team.
The Operational Risk Controller’s primary duty is to implement the Operational Risk Framework for his/her assigned portfolio. The Controller’s primary objective is to ensure all Operational Risks are identified, properly assessed and recorded in the Operational Risk Inventory, and have adequate remediation plans to reduce the risks to an acceptable level.
The Controller’s responsibilities include:
- Develop and execute the ORC strategy for the assigned portfolio
- Proactively drive the identification, assessment, measurement, mitigation and monitoring of operational risk in the assigned portfolio
- Stay abreast of industry news and regulatory developments pertinent to the assigned portfolio to facilitate a more proactive approach to risk identification and mitigation
- Lead root cause analyses on internal operational risk events and benchmarking analyses on events that occurred in the industry
- Help promote and instil a culture of operational Risk management and operational excellence across the assigned portfolio
- Partner with the business and logistics management to continually improve our operational risk control processes and business operating models; support business growth; and make informed cost/benefit decisions
- Review and approve new business initiatives and offshoring / outsourcing activities
- Provide expert guidance on the development of relevant policies and control documentation
- Coordinate with other risk control functions and leverage internal audit and external reviews to develop a complete and integrated view of risk
Specific requirements
Control expertise - Must possess strong knowledge of internal control design, traded product front-to-back processes, cross product support and risk management principles
Product knowledge – must have strong technical knowledge of fixed income products, a solid foundation in the building blocks of traded products, the functioning of capital markets and investment banking activities.
Functional experience- Must have experience in one or more of trading, product control, middle office, operations, business management, risk control and auditing (ideally combined with more recent functional experience); good knowledge of traded product information technology
Business experience – Must have experience in a global, multicultural, performance-driven organization; Must have experience in process and organizational design; Knowledge of Basel II and Sarbanes-Oxley preferred
Industry experience – Must have knowledge of banking/securities industry regulatory, legal and accounting frameworks in U.S.; Knowledge of operating in Brazil, Mexico and Canada desirable
Core competencies - Must have strong written and verbal communication skills in English with the ability to communicate complex issues succinctly and clearly to non-technical persons; Strong team building, relationship management, project management and problem solving skills; Demonstrable professional integrity and a strong work ethic
Credentials - Must have college degree, with advanced degree strongly preferred; Special industry certification in risk, financial analysis, accounting or six sigma strongly preferred
