The paralegal position would be a key position within the NCRO and the NC RPG as the paralegal position is able to take on responsibilities that would otherwise require an additional attorney position. 

 

Specifically, this paralegal will be responsible for the following:

· Conducting research for six (6) attorneys within the NC RPG on a variety of subjects including, but not limited to policy coverage, civil procedural rules, bad faith law, adjuster licensing requirements and regulatory compliance.

· Conducting legal/regulatory research for the NC Lobbyist, providing background/foundational support for executing the Legislative Action Plan for the NCRO.

· Conducting internal/operational research on a variety of issue in support of the six (6) attorneys and NC Lobbyist as they serve their respective clients.

· Providing industry-related research in support of the NC RPG¿s service to its clients.

· Assisting the Regional Counsel, the NC Lobbyist, and the Assistant General Counsel with researching status of pending legislation, monitoring administrative rulemaking, drafting position papers, developing oral/written testimony, and otherwise preparing for legislative and regulatory hearings and meetings. 

· Conducting legal research to analyze the individual state specific issues for Product and Underwriting, Sales, Processing, Marketing/Advertising, and community engagement issues and events. 

· Updating the various legal research databases and legal training and resource materials. 

· Assisting with legal project management.

· Certified paralegal is preferred.

· Strong analytical and research skills are required.

· North Carolina law and corporate experience is preferred.

 

JOB SUMMARY:  Performs a variety of legal related tasks under the direct supervision of  an attorney. Provides professional assistance and support to the legal staff in the development, research, management and resolution of legal issues involving their business unit.  Prepares and drafts routine legal documents.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:      Reports to Counsel/Paralegal Supervisor

 

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  Provides general legal support services to attorneys and counsel in the form of legal research, drafting of legal and business communications, and internal systems support and maintenance.

2. Performs routine legal research and compiles data from such references as on-line references, digests, practice manuals or other sources. Assists in the research of statutes, regulations and court decisions.  Prepares summaries of digests and provides recommendations on the  resolution to legal questions.

3.  Drafts documents for attorney review.

4.  For attorney review, drafts recommendations and correspondence to clients, claims attorneys, and customer with regard to discovery and legal matters.

5.  Maintains internal data bases of various information.

6.  Assists in the evaluation of open and closed paralegal file audits and informs senior paralegal staff of the audit results; makes appropriate recommendations for improvement.

7.  Knows and applies the fundamental concept, practices and procedures of particular field of specialization. Maintains currency in both business unit and legal professional competencies.

8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

               

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:             

Education:           Undergraduate studies in business administration, insurance or other related area preferred.

Designations:  Certification in paralegal studies or equivalent experience.

Experience:  Typically  one year of experience in a paralegal capacity.

Knowledge:  Working knowledge of paralegal concepts, procedures and practices.  Knowledge of operations, practices and procedures of general counsel or civil litigation.  Knowledge of the filing requirements of relevant courts and administrative agencies.  Must have a demonstrated knowledge in legal research and deposition motion practices as well as appellate procedures.

Skills/ Competencies:     Analytical, research and organizational skills. Ability to set work priorities that conform with established standards. Ability to give presentations in both formal and informal settings. Strong verbal and written skills for contact with associates, attorneys, clients and customers.  Ability to operate a personal computer and related legal and business software and data bases.

 

Staffing Exceptions:        Staffing exceptions to the above minimum job requirements must be approved by the:  Officer,  Managing Counsel and Human Resources.
