Located in historic Washington, D.C., Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) is a consortium of over 100 US universities dedicated to the operation of science facilities for the acquisition, management, and distribution of seismological data. IRIS programs contribute to scholarly research, education, earthquake hazard mitigation, and verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
PHP Web Developer/Administrator
The PHP Web Developer/Administrator provides technical development and support to create new interactive applications for IRIS Headquarters, IRIS Education Public Outreach, and USArray websites.
The successful candidate will be able lead the development, design, implementation, and maintenance of IRIS websites. Develop and maintain web applications, web related databases, file transfers, and web-based APIs using RSS, and structured data such as XML for Seismographs in Schools, curriculum materials, Image Gallery and Youtube videos. Additionally the candidate will develop and maintain internship and Seismographs in Schools applications and submission in PHP.
Additional Responsibilities include:
- Maintain, customize, and create interactive applications for the IRIS websites built on the Expression Engine platform.
- Manage the project to develop a document management system in Alfresco.
- Lead other projects to enable IRIS to better utilize and take advantage of information technology.
- Provide miscellaneous IT support including the contact management application, basic troubleshooting, and interface with the outside systems administrator.
- Administer the operation of the IRIS VOIP phone systems.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate will possess the following abilities, attributes, experience and skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Earth/Physical Science, or equivalent professional experience, and 3 years’ experience in Web/IT administration.
- Demonstrated experience in website design and maintenance.
- Demonstrated ability to lead web/IT projects to a successful conclusion.
- Fluency in Expression Engine, or similar CMS.
- Experience with PHP, MySQL, XHTML, CSS, AJAX.
- Experience working with PHP Frameworks
- Experience with web-based APIs using RSS, and structured data such as XML.
- Familiarity with document/image management systems such as Alfresco or Gallery.
- Self-starter with the ability to identify and pursue improvements independently.
- Familiarity with graphic design applications such as Photoshop and Flash and with managing online videos.
- Ability to work collegially with diverse personalities including other staff, members of the IRIS Consortium, and educational partners.
- Demonstrated interest in developing educational applications preferred.
