Modern complex systems, such as ground vehicles and aircraft, are built of subcomponents that are increasingly complex themselves. Individual vehicles are designed and built using thousands of computer models that capture components, subsystems, and the vehicle itself at various levels of abstraction. In spite of this automation, much human interaction and trial and error is required to design, build, and successfully field a new vehicle. What if we could create meta-models that integrate component models and efficiently elicit only the information needed from humans? What if we could use these models to simulate a vehicle with enough fidelity to vastly reduce trial and error? What if our models would allow us to efficiently adapt the vehicle to changes in technology, mission, and environment? Our customer DARPA thinks we might reduce the time to design and field a vehicle by a factor of five!
BAE System's Technology Solutions group in Burlington, MA, together with BAE's Minneapolis-based Land and Armaments Group, recently completed a 15-month program that made significant advances toward this vision. We are carrying these results forward to new government programs and applying them to manufacturing in our sister BAE organizations. We are looking for a Principle Investigator to help us further develop and apply this work, and to help us capture additional funding.
You will collaborate with university research groups and lead multi-disciplinary and multi-organizational teams in execution of complex research and development projects. As a Principal Investigator you will shape significant research agendas, communicate value propositions and goals to customers and partners, develop technology product lines and prepare proposals to continue development of ambitious leading edge capabilities.

Required Skills:
You will have experience in one or more of the following technical areas: system modeling, modeling and simulation, systems engineering tools and methods, symbolic and/or probabilistic reasoning, and knowledge representation.
Qualified candidates will have doctoral level education in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence or other related Computer Engineering field and at least 7 years of research / advanced development experience, a successful record of proposal authoring, and project leadership/management experience. Writing and presentation skills are a must, as is the desire to develop research programs via proposal writing and other marketing efforts with research funding agencies such as DARPA.
Preferred Skills:
You ideally will have substantial academic credentials (Ph.D. preferred) and experience in one or more of the following areas: system modeling, modeling and simulation, systems engineering tools and methods, symbolic and/or probabilistic reasoning, and knowledge representation. You will have excellent written and verbal communications skills, and leadership experience in agile research and development teams.
