Department Overview
The Finance department covers Product and Financial Control. Both Product and Financial Control are jointly responsible for the integrity of the financial records of Barclays Capital. Product Control provides explanations of business revenues, attributing any movements to market positions, inherent risk and new deals. The team is also responsible for ensuring the integrity of the balance sheet for revenue products. Product Control is pivotal to our reporting and control infrastructure and the information provided by the group gives us the means to assess business performance. In addition, the group coordinates all global finance controls and procedures. Financial Decision Support bolsters Barclays Capital's growth by enabling and supporting all financial decisions within the firm, through timely provision of quality data and partnership with key strategic decision makers. Product Control has a significant presence and role within the Organization. There is a close working relationship with the trading desks and other areas focusing on control, service and reporting. We are a central point of contact for many issues that affect the bank. By placing a heavy emphasis on information technology and focusing on project work, we are able to address control and operational risks and meet our internal and external obligations.
Main Function
The role is within the Prime Services section of the Product Control Group (PCG). Product Control performs a variety of daily tasks both executing current controls for Product Control and providing the traders with information. A key role is daily liaison with fellow members of PCG on PL, Balance Sheet, and ad hoc queries. Product Control is often the first point of contact for the traders and will deal with questions on existing positions and must be able to offer advice on control and accounting aspects of proposed new business. It is also a significant point of contact for Operations, IT and Finance as a whole. The role gives the chance to gain technical exposure to products, markets on current business and new business proposals. Building strong relationships with many departments is especially important since we often liaise with various groups.
Main Duties
- Deliver timely and accurate daily PL for the OTC Derivative Clearing business
- Monitor PL and balance sheet movements so that they are fully understood, explained, and reported to the front office
- Responsible for month-end book closing of and balance sheet signoff
- Perform front office to back office reconciliations, and follow up on any breaks for timely resolution. · Collaborate with the Operations, Financial Control, and IT groups to ensure accuracy of downstream processes, including accounting and control responsibilities
- Gather requirements and assist in implementation of both new and enhanced systems
- Participate in user acceptance testing in preparation of adding new products or clearing through new central counterparties
