PRODUCT ENGINEER (2003041) Position Summary: To advocate and support the Corporate WIN Strategy by handling design responsibilities for assigned products. To develop new product variants, new products, and to maintain and improve the product in terms of cost, quality, and performance. Scope/Supervision and Interaction: This job does not have supervisory responsibility; however, the position Mentors entry-level Product Engineers and new employees. Must have ability to deal with people at a cross-functional level. Position requires ability to effectively communicate in oral and written form in order to present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, and customers. Essential Functions: -Identifies opportunities for product improvements and cost out through evaluation of manufacturing practices and assembly methods. Utilizes CAD software to develop product improvements. Performs cost analyses to justify changes, and coordinates activities of multiple disciplines to implement the changes. -Performs root cause analysis on defective products using engineering principles and knowledge of manufacturing processes. Determine root cause using statistical methods (e.g., Design of Experiments (DOE), SPC). Modifies existing products to resolve quality problems, and coordinates activities of multiple disciplines to implement a solution. -Modifies existing products and creates new products for new applications. Utilizes knowledge of systems and works directly with OEM s to determine product performance requirements. Leads team members of product development projects, and justifies monetary resources and personnel to attain project goals. -Defines product performance standards and product acceptance standards using knowledge of systems and laboratory testing equipment and procedures. Determines disposition of non-conforming material using engineering judgment and knowledge. Job Requirements : Qualifications:-B.S. in Engineering or Engineering Technology and 3-5 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Good math skills, and familiarity with personal computer and CAD software required. Must possess strong mechanical aptitude, ability to use basic measuring tools, and hands-on capabilities to work on projects without supervision. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes preferred. Prefer lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, project management, FMEA, and quality systems experience. -While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and hear and is regularly required to speak. The employee must occasionally stand and walk. Specific vision requirements include close vision, and the ability to focus. -This position is exposed to moving equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position requires occasional travel. Offer Relocation : Maybe Other Skills : Additional Responsibilities: The Product Design Engineer is responsible for new product conceptualization and the detailed design of products that meet or exceed customer specifications. Products are engineered in accordance with good engineering practices and company procedures. Strong consideration is given, during the design process, to DFMA, tool design practices and standards, as well as cost. It also involves product design and development (prototype and production) to achieve the flawless launch of new products into production. The incumbent, because of his/her experience and education, is able to carry out assignments with little or no direct day-to-day supervision. Coordinates with: Customers, Sales/Marketing Managers, Application Engineers, Tool Engineering, Operations, Value Stream Leaders, Manufacturing/Process Engineers, Sample Dept., Materials Engineering, Process Engineering. Quality Control and Suppliers. Additional Duties: Design cost effective elastomeric sealing products based on new and existing designs and technology, product history, molding methods, materials and processes. Provides customer-facing leadership to work through design issues and communicate value. Utilize full working knowledge and stay abreast of latest product, materials, mold design, manufacturing and quality technologies. Keep up to date with end applications and emerging marketing trends; recommend and initiate the development of new products and technologies. Create and maintain well documented design files in accordance with the applicable Quality Plans (TS-16949) Design Control requirements and established procedures. Develop and maintain clear and concise design records. Plan, request, coordinate, analyze and document product verification and validation testing (development and E.S. testing). Initiate, monitor, review and approve samples for submission to customers and/or internal evaluation. Communicate and coordinate project activities with Application Engineers, Sales/Marketing and directly with customers, including customer visits and presentations, as necessary. Mentor entry level Engineers and Co-op students Maintain adherence to company policies, safety/ergonomic standards and good housekeeping practices. Understand and implement Health, Safety and Environmental efficiency into daily work activities. Additional Qualifications/ Requirements: Minimum of 3 years experience in direct customer contact selling ideas, preferably in the rubber seal industry. Experience with rubber to metal bonding design and systems preferred. Working knowledge of DFMEA and PFMEA is required. Ability to interpret and create engineering drawings including geometric tolerance and dimensioning (GDT). Project Management experience with the ability to manage priorities and workload. An advanced degree is a plus but not required.
