Reports To: Clinical Team Manager
Hours: On an as needed basis, all shifts, including weekends and holidays
Status: Part Time Unscheduled (2 Positions)
Base rate of pay: $22.6829 per hour
JOB SUMMARY:
As part of the surgical team the RPN is responsible to provide care for all types of surgery in a patient and family centred way. Additionally, the Surgical program supports the Genetics program, and in doing so, the RPN is responsible to provide care for patients undergoing genetic terminations – before, during and after. The RPN in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team will deliver treatment with an emphasis on assessment, education, prevention, maintenance, and restoration of health in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner.
All roles are essential in providing a safe and healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and others by ensuring that health and safety policies are followed.
In addition to the current surgical beds on 5N/5S, there are also short stay beds on the unit. Please note that you may be assigned short stay patients along with the surgical patients.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
- Registered Practical Nurse Diploma or equivalent.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required.
- Current Medication Certificate.
PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION:
- College of Nurses of Ontario.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One year recent experience in surgery.
- Genetic termination experience.
- PCA, epidural, ostomy, TPN experience.
- Patient Assessment course.

- Clinical competence in surgical nursing skills.
- Ability to use critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to organize patient care demands and to set priorities.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with all members of the health-care team including patients and families.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated and ongoing commitment to professional development.
- Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner.
- Bilingualism in French/English an asset.
