This nurse provides high risk nursing care or performs high risk procedures (e.g., conscious sedation, lumbar puncture, bone marrow biopsy, or chemotherapy). May perform minimally invasive procedures (e.g., IV therapy) and/or high risk nursing care (e.g., conscious sedation, complex patient assessment, high risk procedures, and medication administration) and have the required knowledge, skills, and competencies. Where nursing care is provided, the nursing process of assessing, diagnosing, outcome identification, planning, implementing, and evaluating is the basis for care delivered. The Ambulatory Care RN provides professional nursing care across practice settings and the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The Ambulatory Care RN supports the community through community involvement and the organization through education, committee work, and participation in research. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice (2004), the AAACN Ambulatory Care Nursing Administration and Practice Standards (2004), and the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing (2001) provide a basis for practice. The RN may work in the outpatient and/or inpatient environment. Works flexible hours, generally Monday through Friday mirroring the ambulatory practice; however, may have on-call responsibilities (generally unrestricted) outside of normal work hours. May be cross-trained to work in multiple sites at the employer's discretion.
