Specific Job Description Responsible for leading analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance engineering of satellite communication systems. The position requires an in depth knowledge of industry standards with respect to all subsystems required to ensure reliable satellite communications. Must possess an extensive working knowledge of satellite ground systems, SSPAs, up/down converters, modems and MC systems. Also serves as subject matter expert and mentor in satellite communications arena. Deployment to Antarctica may be required at the discretion of management. ? Performs as a subject matter expert (SME) for satellite communications systems in order to provide input and advice to Senior Management and NSF technology experts with regards to satellite system capability and strategic direction. ? Conducts analysis and design of satellite communication systems used to support voice, data, and video transfer. Works with operations to review existing system design, operational efficiency, control systems, and supportability. Recommends improvements to the preceding to improve USAP communications capabilities and reliability. ? Engineers systems and support logistics to achieve uninterrupted communications for stations and field camps. ? Reviews existing systems for sparing and life cycle maintenance schedules to establish both tactical and strategic budgeting plans to ensure uninterrupted communications capabilities from stations as well as field camps that require satellite communications capabilities. ? Provides input to station IT Managers to secure required skill sets among seasonal technician staff. ? Assists on ice satellite technicians with technical data and troubleshooting suggestions. ? Designs, assembles, tests and deploys mobile satellite communications devices as required. ? Reviews existing systems for sparing and life cycle maintenance schedules to establish both tactical and strategic budgeting plans to ensure uninterrupted communications capabilities from stations as well as field camps that require satellite communications capabilities. ? Inspects and drafts ?As Built? documentation for existing infrastructure. ? Acts as SME to the safety department in order to assist with developing RF safety training materials and safety standards. ? Deploy to Antarctica or other locations to gather information or to supervise system installations, as required. ? Remains current on latest developments in the communications industry through trade and vendor publications, professional seminars and corporate sponsored training. ? Performs other duties as required. Standard Job Description Conducts mission/program specific real time spacecraft/satellite flight operations during readiness, execution and evaluation phases. Develops detailed plans and procedures to provide maximum mission support in areas such as orbit dynamics, satellite performance analysis, command and control of on-orbit satellites. Provides technical direction for on orbit mission support, plans for critical vehicle malfunctions and recommends alternate operating techniques to continue maximum mission support. Provides failure analysis of the performance of the orbiting satellites via telemetry data. Utilizes system software to accomplish all spacecraft control tasks and recommends improvements. Analyzes and validates software performance. Performs flight length orbit adjust and daily special event studies.
