Senior Research Analyst – Upstream Oil Gas

Summary

The Senior Research Analyst is responsible for providing research and analysis of data supplied from internal and external vendors for all publications and for a series of new research reports for sale to the stakeholders in the oil and natural gas contract drilling industry. The Senior Research Analyst will also assist the Director of News Analysis in developing a portfolio of special research reports that will leverage the brand and help create new synergies with other statistical report products. Regular responsibilities include providing research and analysis of statistical trend data for eventual web-based products and creating sophisticated, proprietary statistical modeling and forecasting tools needed to generate unique and high-value research reports for sale. This is a position that involves supporting well-established publications through their transition to the web and creating new analysis-based products to help build company revenues.

Job Duties

• Use qualitative and quantitative techniques to interpret upstream oil gas data and produce substantiated recommendations useful for the publications’ editorial missions.

• Utilize analytical knowledge and statistical modeling skills in support of new proprietary, high-value research reports of interest to stakeholders tracking all aspects of the Upstream Oil Gas industry.

• Create proprietary, sophisticated statistical modeling and predictive tools for assessing the historical, current, and future drilling market trends that may leverage new editorial product concepts.

• Generate web-enabled indices for tracking and comparing oil gas drilling market trends, e.g., regional drilling activity, day rates, and financial and market indicators, etc.

• Assist in the redevelopment of the company website to accommodate the new research and analysis web content.

• Maintain strict adherence to editorial standards and deadlines in generating analysis and reports.

• Undertake other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education:

• Masters degree in statistics, economics, econometrics, finance, mathematics or related field

Required Experience:

• 7 years of experience in research and analysis based at least in part on statistical data gathering and interpretation

• 5 years of experience in research and analysis related to the upstream oil and gas industry

• Expert-level skills in building, executing, and validating sophisticated, proprietary statistical models and formulas from historical data and generating trends analysis and forecasts

• Expertise in analyzing and interpreting financial data, particularly for business-to-business communications

• Skills at developing valuation methodologies and tools specific to oil and gas upstream markets

• Strong capabilities in utilizing, managing, and optimizing complex databases

• Robust numerical programming skills.

• Grounding in probability theory, numerical analysis, and time series analysis

Other Skills:

• Good communications skills related to explaining key business drivers and their variances

• Familiarity with web applications needed to implement online research indices.

• Intellectual curiosity, propensity for critical thinking, resourcefulness, and strong attention to detail

• Excellent decision-making ability and time-management skills.

• Ability to work in an occasionally pressured environment, e.g., generating requested interactive online graphs and charts from data in accordance with editorial deadlines and developing large-scope research and analysis for special reports on deadline

• Good interpersonal skills, especially in interacting with oil and gas industry and financial community personnel:  absorbing industry knowledge and company/market information from industry executives and experts, engaging in dialogue about the company’s research products

• Strong organizational abilities, especially a capacity for smart prioritization

• Proficiency in key spreadsheet, quantitative analysis, statistical modeling, and database computer applications and relevant programming languages, e.g., Excel, Oracle, SQL, SPSS, SAS, C++, Fortran, etc.

• Capability to collaborate well and closely with other News Analysis Group team members and other company personnel

• Ability to travel occasionally to company and industry functions in other locales that may require a number of overnight stays

• Above all, a strong work ethic wedded to initiative

• Reports directly to Director of News Analysis
