Role Description Design and perform experiments to aid development of fermentation processes for the production of native and recombinant vaccine antigens. The incumbent develops and performs the diverse fermentation operations required to optimize the production of vaccine candidates. Expertise will be used to develop new techniques, to critically evaluate results and suggest approaches to solve problems. The individual should be an experienced microbiologist or bio-engineer with a strong background in microbiology, fermentation development and medium optimization with analytical skill. The operation of 10L, 70L, and up to 400L bioreactors is a main component of this job Responsibilities " Develop, optimize, and scale-up fermentation process at 10L scale for the preparation of vaccine candidates up to pilot plant scale (70L and 400L scales). " Develop and optimize fermentation medium and define fermentation parameters by DOE method. " Transfer developed process to late phase manufacturing. " Presents problems and proposed solutions in discussion with group members. Offers insights based on experience to group members to help solve problems. " Critically evaluate own and others results to determine if processes are optimal or if opportunities exist. " Present periodic status updates to the group. Prepare technical reports, as needed. " Fully document laboratory experiments in notebooks in a timely and compliant manner. " Perform assay to monitor and analyze the fermentation and productivity. Assist in developing new assays and adapt existing assays to new materials. Discuss analytical issues with team members to help advance objectives. Qualifications " This position requires BS plus 10 years experience; MS with 8 years; Ph.D. plus 2 years experience in bioprocess development. A strong background in microbiology and biochemistry is essential. Analytical skill is a plus. Proficiency with personal computers including word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint and relevant scientific software is desirable. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
