Qualifications
- You have written a significant amount of code
- Extensive experience building large-scale server applications, with expert knowledge developing and debugging in Linux (LAMP) environments
- Expert at building, configuring, and evaluating highly available, large-scale distributed systems
- Well-versed in highly scalable solutions in data storage, analysis and reporting for large-scale, distributed data sets
- You have experience in (ideally several) languages such as PHP, Java, JavaScript, Haskell, Lisp, Python, Ruby, C++
- Have an understanding the principles of open source software development
- Recognize the importance of building a global community of supporters for Wikimedia's mission, and strive to enlist others in helping us
- BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or Mathematics or equivalent experience
Pluses
- You know open source and free culture, and have contributed to open source projects. Or if not, you've been at a closed-source company and you're looking to finally unleash your code on the world
- You know what it means to be a volunteer or to coordinate the work of volunteers
We’re looking for a solid developer that knows or can quickly learn about multimedia infrastructure, so experience developing and/or deploying web-based multimedia applications is a big plus. In addition to our large PHP code base, we have some Bash and Python scripts, and Puppet configuration. Familiarity with (and contribution to) open source projects and/or working with the Wikipedia communtiy will be helpful. This will be an opportunity to learn more (or teach us about) about distributed filesystems, as we are working with Ceph and OpenStack’s Swift.
