You are
An experienced web application software developer with operations and leadership experience. You are passionate about Wikimedia's mission to bring free knowledge to every person on the planet. You are excited to play a major role in modernizing major subsystems in the Wikimedia server cluster (such as our plans to overhaul our notification system and building up our media storage capability).
Ideally, you understand the principles of open source software development, the importance of testing and documentation, and the common pitfalls in developing secure web applications. You can competently optimize database queries, adjust server configuration settings, develop new features and lead a team of other engineers in these efforts.
You enjoy the technical challenges associated with managing a database of hundreds of thousands of records, and want to support the production pipelines making it happen. You are outspoken, highly communicative, a good facilitator, and a great listener and you lead by example.

Job Summary
- Take a leadership role in selected engineering efforts, including:
- Maintain the quality and architectural coherence of software used by Wikimedia for assigned area
- Communicate, educate and implement best practices and standards
- On-board new engineering team members
- Represent engineering team and assist team management in planning (estimation, risk evaluation, etc.), self-organization and identification/resolution of blockers
- Work with other engineering leads to ensure common problems receive common solutions
- Support the entire project team in technical matters (QA testers, product manager, etc.)
- Design and develop necessary components to support MediaWiki extensions
- Develop new features and enhance existing features for Wikimedia sites
- Work on a variety of projects including but not limited to user-facing features, support systems such as fundraising, survey tools, etc., depending on priority
- Help improve efficiency, scalability, and stability of various system components
- Maintain software (for example, fixing bugs and updating deprecated APIs)
- Conduct design and code reviews
- Support testing efforts for feature deployments
- Participate in periodic technology meetings for design, development and testing
