Senior Storage Administrator Job in Toronto, Ontario Canada
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Scotiabank Group is seeking a Senior Storage Administrator. The successful candidate is responsible for administration and maintenance of the different aspects of Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure in a 24 x 7 production environment. This includes provisioning, managing, troubleshooting and monitoring of fiber channel switches and storage subsystems. The incumbent is also expected to provide technical assistance to users, be on primary pager rotation, be involved in systems capacity planning and recommendation of solutions to overcome resource constraints, administer systems level software installation and updates.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Resolution and Prevention of Problems
- Presented with system level and application problems on mission critical systems requiring immediate resolution, thus ensuring systems are operational according to agreed upon service level agreements and that they have a high degree of integrity and reliability. Often, resolution determination requires interaction with service vendors. Considerable effort is placed into determining, developing and delivering procedures to protect production environment from unplanned outages.
2. Provide Technical Assistance to Users
- Establishes system scope and objectives. Develops practical manual or automated procedures to solve complex problems. Prepares detailed specifications for programs, analyse and revises existing system logic deficiencies, oversees all phases of the technical system design and will advice, check and direct systems programs onto the correct technical system design.
3. Systems Administration and New Projects
- Perform system administration tasks associated with environment of specialisation for the development, UAT and production environment as well supporting production code implementation. Provide training on specific environment to Operations, Network and Development Departments as required. New projects could include applications such as central back up for applications and databases, application monitoring tools or high-speed restoration software.
4. Control Access, Ensure Security and Contingency Planning
- Ongoing customisation and maintenance of system access facilities to ensure and enforce strict security of financial environment. Plan, implement and test contingency plans for various hardware and software environments.
5. System Monitoring and Updates
- During the course of the year, applications are monitored and statistical information regarding resource usage is compiled. Recommendations are put forward to management for capacity planning and system upgrades where resource constraints are identified to ensure that a reliable production environment is maintained.
6. User Group Involvement
- Participate in user groups to gain information on other user's project successes and/or failures. Required to keep up to date with technological breakthroughs and trends in field of specialization.
Other Responsibilities:
- Infrastructure Planning: Provide assistance in the development of storage infrastructure, development and best practices based on banks standards and maintaining documentation.
- Policies and Procedures: Assist in identifying, development and maintenance of policies and procedures that are relevant to the proper operational functions of the SAN infrastructure. Assist in quarterly reviews of documentation and ensure their availability to the users and management.
- Evaluate New Products and Services: Assist in the evaluation of new products as outlined by the SAN Management and Vendors. Provide detailed results to be incorporated in the management summary reports.
- Users Education: Assist in presenting the SAN users with education materials to ensure that the UNIX Support, Windows Support, Business lines are current with SAN design and implementations.
- Disaster Recovery: Maintain operational readiness ensuring rapid and complete recovery in the event of a catastrophic disaster. Conduct testing on a regular bases as outlined in the banks policies and procedures, to ensure DR functionality. Update the policies and procedures as required.
- Risk Assessment: Ability to use the SAN tools to monitor the environment and identify any issues which could be of a risk to the storage performance, data integrity, procedures and best practices for both logical and physical protection of storage arrays, fiber channel directors switches.
- Initial Installation: Provision Director ports, allocate disk space, configure LUN masking and zoning, HBA drivers, and the appropriate failover / load balancing SAN software.
- New Installation - Participates in the installation, configuration and tuning of storage software on all host platforms including UNIX Solaris, Windows and Linux.
- Storage Allocations - Allocation and provision disk as required by applications groups
- Trouble shooting Resolution - prompt support to SAN user groups or system monitoring to identify or assist in resolving technical Storage, fiber channel, directors switches and tape devices and backup.
- Monitor and Support - Monitor and support share storage array systems in accordance with predetermined service level agreements to achieve acceptable and consistent levels of performance and ensuring reliable operations.
- Project Planning and Management: Provide assistance in project management functions during all stages of requirements rollout including: assessment, planning, initiation, implementation and management
- Data Migration: Provide assistance to support teams in the migration of existing system data as the systems is migrated to the SAN or migrate.
- Capacity Planning: Update the capacity-planning model for the SAN environment (subsystems, switches, directors) to ensure that the most current capacities are accurate. Make recommendations to management on the requirements to increase capacity.
FUNCTIONAL COMPENTENCIES:
- 4+ years experience working with SAN technology
- Experience in support and administration of HDS (Hitachi Data Systems) enterprise and modular arrays.
- Experience in support and administration of Brocade enterprise and modular fiber-channel switches. Certification is a plus
- Working knowledge of SAN management software, experience with Hitachi Command Suite preferred
- Working knowledge of SAN monitoring tools. experience with Hitachi Tuning Manager and Brocade Network Advisor preferred.
- Must have good experience with Solaris, Linux and Windows Operating Systems administration
- Must have good working experience with Symantec Foundation Suite and Oracle ZFS, familarity with multipathing software required
- Must have good working knowledge of Fiber Channel protocol and switch technology
- Must have good working knowledge of RAID technology and different disk drive types
- Experience working in a large, enterprise environment with 100+ servers
- Experience with problem solving, trouble shooting analysis.
- Works well under pressure and time constraints and can prioritize competing tasks appropriately.
- Willingness to work overtime and provide on-call support as required.
- Scripting capabilities is a plus
- Able to handle 2nd level calls
- The candidate must have excellent communication and service skills
EDUCATION AND ACCREDITATIONS:
- A degree in computer science or a related designation with more than 3 years practical experience is desired.
