The New York City Housing Authority’s IT Infrastructure Department is seeking a Senior UNIX/Linux Systems Administrator/Assistant Chief of Operations to join its UNIX/Linux Systems Management Team.
The UNIX/Linux Systems Management Team provides enterprise-wide systems support services for mission-critical systems. NYCHA maintains approximately 150 Sun Solaris/Red Hat Linux Servers which are located among three Datacenters. The UNIX/Linux team provides technical services to include: systems design, planning, hardware/software installation, operations, maintenance, and upgrades to UNIX/Linux systems and infrastructure components which support the Authority’s daily operating business functions. Unix/Linux team primary focus areas: UNIX/Linux Systems Engineering, UNIX/Linux Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery, UNIX/Linux Systems Operations, UNIX/Linux Systems Documentation, Procurement and Contract.
The Senior UNIX/Linux Systems Administrator/Assistant Chief of UNIX/Linux Systems Operations will provide enterprise-wide UNIX/Linux System infrastructure support for complex system and interconnected technologies that require day-to-day support and administration in order to maintain optimum performance and utilization. In addition, candidate will assist the UNIX/Linux Chief of Operations with providing technical leadership and mentoring to a team of five UNIX/Linux Systems Administrators in the following areas: Sun Solaris 10 Systems Operating System Support, Red Hat Linux Operating System Support, Veritas Cluster administration and server virtualization, Enterprise Netbackup, Sun LDAP for UNIX systems and applications including various existing NYCHA applications. Specific duties shall include, but not be limited to the following:
- Perform UNIX/Linux Systems Administration for 150 Enterprise Sun Solaris10 Linux Systems to include: Sun 25K, SunFire series, M3000/M4000/M5000/T5120/T5220/T5240/T5440/V490//V280, Intel X86, etc.
- Maintain UNIX/Linux infrastructure environment at NYCHA datacenters during business hours and off-hours; troubleshoot networking services and protocols: TCP/IP, DNS, NFS, LDAP, FTP, SSH, SMTP, SNMP, SSL, and HTTP.
- Install, configure, and maintain UNIX/Linux server equipment, disk arrays, tape libraries, virtual tape libraries and terminal servers; UNIX/Linux routine operation functions; maintain high end UNIX/Linux servers and new UNIX/Linux projects.
- Provide data protection, recovery and business continuity; test and validate disaster recovery and business continuity methods in UNIX/Linux environment.
- Perform routine backup and recovery for data protection and integrity for 150 UNIX/Linux servers; monitor UNIX/Linux infrastructure which consists of complex sets of equipment and system software; provide proactive remediation.
- Perform proactive monitoring for high availability, System data protection, backup and restore, UNIX central authentication, user account management, disk storage management, hardware and OS maintenance, and application maintenance.
- Install, configure and maintain highly optimized Virtualized UNIX/Linux environment using Zone/Container, LDOM and VMware virtualization technologies; UNIX/Linux High Availability environment consisting of different HA techniques i.e. clustering, load balancing, and cluster file systems; UNIX/Linux storage environment using Solaris Disk Suite or Solaris Volume Manager, Veritas Volume Manager and ZFS.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Professional/vendor certification(s) in wide area network administration that is required for the position to be filled. In addition, all candidates must have the following:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and two years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) experience in wide area network planning, design, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, enhancement, and security management; or
2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) information technology experience of which at least 2 years must have been as described in “1” above; or
3. A master’s degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college may substitute for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have at least one year of satisfactory (not classroom based) full-time information technology experience as described in “1” above.

In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements:
Incumbents may be required to update existing and/or obtain additional professional industry-standard certification(s) for current and future technical environment(s) in which they may be assigned to work, as determined by the employing agency.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college; five to ten years experience providing UNIX/Sun Solaris and/or Linux Operating systems administration support for large scale complex UNIX/Linux environments.
- UNIX/Sun Solaris 10 systems administration.
- Technical Project Leader experience.
- Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris v8 or v9 or v10 or Greater Operating System
-or- - Red Hat Linux Certified Engineer (RHCE)
-or- - SUSE Certified Linux Expert (SCLE) v9, v10 or Greater
- VMware Certified Professional (VCP).
SKILLS DESIRED:
- The ability to keep up with updates in the UNIX/Linux environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; good problem solving skills; eager to learn and share knowledge with the team; ability to work within strict deadlines and with a wide spectrum of people.
- Veritas Cluster Server, Veritas Storage foundation and other High Availability techniques in the UNIX environment.
- Veritas NetBackup.
- Solaris Disk Suite or Solaris Volume Manager and ZFS.
- Shell scripting and/or Perl scripting experience.
- System level support for Oracle application and database Servers, Java application servers, Websphere or other large-scale databases in a UNIX/Linux environment.
- Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity in UNIX/Linux environment.
- EMC storage array based SAN environment.
- Knowledge of Sun Entry-Level, Midrange and High-End Enterprise servers and Sun disk arrays.
- Extensive knowledge and experience in supporting and troubleshooting Solaris networking services and protocols: TCP/IP, DNS, NFS, LDAP, FTP, SSH, SMTP, SNMP, SSL, HTTP.
- UNIX/Linux environment with Oracle RDBMS, Java application server, Websphere or other large-scale databases and traditional three-tier architecture (Web/App/DB Servers).
- Sun Virtualization technologies: Container and LDOM.
- SUN LDAP or Oracle Directory Services/LDAP.
- Sun SMC and Quest monitoring tools.
