Sr. Principal Engineer

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
A sterilization process technology expert in aseptic processing and filling systems supporting Abbott Nutrition globally. This position supports the technology selection, design, and qualification of new lines and promotes best practices across existing installations for the manufacture of infant and nutritional beverages. Other areas of focus include retort sterilization, LACF regulations, process qualification/validation, and CIP/SIP.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides strategic direction and acts as an Abbott Nutrition discipline expert in aseptic sterilization technology.

Identifies, reviews, and assesses sterilization process technology that could increase margin, improve efficiency, improve quality, or gain/protect intellectual property. Coordinates closely with RD, manufacturing, engineering, and QA/Regulatory groups.

Designs and leads complex experiments, often with multiple variables, gathers data and performs detailed analysis. Assesses relevance. Communicates across functions, across disciplines, and presents data to upper management.

Challenges the status quo to ensure diverse sterilization solutions are actively pursued.
Applies technology in innovative ways. Combines technologies to anticipate or address customer needs and shares solutions across manufacturing sites and projects.

Assures that sterilization technology designs and solutions meets all functional, customer and regulatory requirements. Maintains a high level of accountability and plays a key role in the execution and start up of global projects.

Provides analyses and technical advice to senior management on a global basis, often collaborating with outside consultants, technical counterparts from other Divisions and key vendors.

Mitigates risk through sound design, development of project timelines, early risk assessment and implementation of fallback strategies. Develops scenarios to give management a set of viable alternatives; relates risk and gain to critical success factors and recommends actions.

Provides technical expertise to troubleshoot sterilization issues at Abbott Nutrition and contract manufacturing operations. Assists customers in the development and implementation of process improvements to enhance operating performance and efficiency.

Provides technical expertise to assess contract manufacturing facilities for production readiness, and conducts engineering/manufacturing due diligence. Leads the development of consistent gap assessments and recommendations.

Acts as a trusted advisor and provides technical mentoring for less-experienced members of staff. Provides guidance and direction to external engineering resources.

A minimum 10+ years direct experience in a sterilization technology field with at least 5 years experience in aseptic processing of foods and/or beverages. Microbiology experience preferred.

Knowledge of FDA regulatory standards and requirements for the manufacture of infant formula and nutritional beverages.

A technical background involving aseptic processing, aseptic filling, and retort sterilization manufacturing processes.

Adaptable to work on a variety of projects including engineering design, sterilization process development, new technology assessment, and operations troubleshooting.

Direct experience in the qualification and startup of new installations preferred.

International experience recommended.
