Sr. Support Engineer, Database Services - Simple DB / Dynamo DB / RDS

The successful Support Engineer within our team will do much more than plug computers together or track changes. They will be instrumental in deploying, operating, and scaling a massive always-on distributed system that is part of an entirely new software development approach.
We are seeking people with strong support engineering skills. The ideal candidate will be clearly passionate about the large opportunity that Amazon database services presents and about web services, in general. You have thrived and succeeded in operating complex systems and diagnosing and resolving the hardest corner case problems. You will be working in a hyper-growth environment where priorities shift quickly. Your technical knowledge includes Linux systems administration. You will need to be very comfortable with networking database technologies. You must be able to triage situations quickly and work equally well with internal engineers and external customers to bring about swift problem resolution.
This position is located in Herndon, VA
- Minimum of 1 year experience in a 24/7 production environment
- Minimum of 7 years technical support or development experience
- Minimum of 5 years experience with the Linux operating system
- B.S in Computer Science, MIS, CIS, or a related field
-Physical requirements - The ability to sit in front of computer for entire scheduled shift while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail
-Must be able to work in a rotational shift environment across including weekends and holidays
This position requires the Applicant selected to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) eligibility and access. A US Government administered polygraph examination will be required. TS/SCI eligibility is not required to start; however, the applicant selected will be subject to a Single-Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified national security information. Applicants with a current SSBI, SBPR, or PPR, may be eligible for crossover in accordance with ICPG 704.4.
- MS Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field
- Intermediate understanding of the UNIX/Windows operating system
- Advanced troubleshooting skills
- Knowledge of databases like MySQL
- Experience with SQL scripts and database administration
- Some OO design and coding skills developing distributed systems
- Experience building services using Java, REST, and SOAP
- Excellent communication, prioritization, and analytical skills
- Ability to work in a fast paced and agile development environment
- Must be able to see opportunities for improvement, take ownership and closely work with development team to drive product improvement.
- Solid networking knowledge
- Passion for providing a great customer experience
