Staff Nurse

The staff nurse is a registered nurse who is responsible for assuring competent, compassionate and cost effective patient care from admission through discharge. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.

Current (BCLS) Basic Life Support Certification. 

 
Other Qualifications:
Able to communicate clearly and effectively in English. 
Able to clearly demonstrate knowledge of nursing process and nursing theory. 
Able to effectively present ideas.
Demonstrates leadership capabilities, good interpersonal skills and a team player.
 
Staff Nurse I: Entry level position for a registered nurse with limited experience, or less than six months clinical experience, or inactive clinical experience for five years. Interim Permit or Current California RN license required.
 
Staff Nurse II: Minimum 1 year current experience in area of specialty. Current California RN license required.
 

UNIT SPECIFIC ADDENDUM FOR POST ANESTHESIA CARE STAFF NURSE II

Professional Expectations:

         Plans for the care of the patient in the immediate postoperative period by utilizing

         the nursing process and ASPAN standards.

         Communicates with other members of the health care team regarding the patient's

         condition during the post operative period.

Education and Training:

1. Has knowledge of the following procedures and ability to perform:

         Arterial line sampling and monitoring

         Nursing responsibilities for patient on a ventilator

         Epidural catheter infusion

         Hemodynamic monitoring

         Airway management

         Code Blue

         Malignant hyperthermia

         Assists with central line placement

2. Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to provide care to patient with:

         Potential for respiratory dysfunction

         Alterations in cardiac output

         Alterations/changes in hydration status

         Alterations in core temperature

         Altered LOC

         Pain management in the post operative phase

Experience:

         Two years recent acute critical care experience and/or

         Two years recent PACU experience and/or

         One year acute critical care experience and one year recent PACU experience required.

         BLS and ACLS required

         Certification as a post anesthesia care nurse (CPAN) preferred

 

 
Temporary equivalent of this posting:
 It is the intent of the Medical Center to hire permanent Registered Nurses into all vacant and newly posted positions requiring nursing licensure. Current Registered Nurses employed by the Medical Center may apply for permanent vacancy or newly-created position and shall be given preference in filling such vacancy on seniority basis, provided:  (a) the Nurse is qualified to fill the vacant position,  and (b) approval of the application will not adversely affect patient care.
 
If, during the seven (7) day posting period, there is no application for the permanent vacancy or newly-created position by any full-time, regular part-time, short-hour or casual Registered Nurses employed by the Medical Center, the Medical Center may fill the position from any source. 
 
In order to provide consistent and competent patient care, it is the intent of the Medical Center to hire regular, short hour, and casual nurses into all open positions.  It is not the intent of the Medical Center to use supplemental agency staffing to avoid terms of Union agreement. However this does not prevent the Medical Center from filling the vacancy on a temporary basis for a temporary period up to a maximum of ninety (90) days unless such temporary period is extended by mutual consent with the Union. Prior to extension, the Medical Center shall offer regular employment to travel nurse, pursuant to Medical Center's standard hiring procedures.
