This is a mid-level professional, technical position in the ITS Research Computing Division. Research Computing provides a set of (typically) 7x24 computational and storage systems, and file and application services, for the research activities of the University. Current storage and file services are based on offerings from NetApp, Isilon, DDN, Dell and other hardware and software vendors. The primary purpose of this position is to provide on-site administration of research storage systems/servers and consulting to UNC-CH faculty, staff, and students in support of their research endeavors. This position specifically involves providing storage administration, file system administration, performance tuning, and user support primarily for central HPC storage systems as well as for additional related Linux and/or Windows-based research computing systems at UNC-CH.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated knowledge of storage technologies as applied to university research environments, data management and data security. Other required skills include demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and perform root-cause analyses of storage issues across various storage networking fabrics and within multiple vendor storage platforms; knowledge of and demonstrated expertise with storage management software technologies; and demonstrated ability to set and meet project timelines based on user and management expectations, policies and guidelines. Extreme attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy are required in this position. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required as is the ability to manage multiple tasks of equal priority. The ability to adapt to changing technologies, changing user needs and requirements, and changing tactical job functions is essential. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team to resolve critical customer and/or system issues is required. Excellent troubleshooting skills in identifying and resolving production problems quickly are essential. Work outside routine (8-5) business hours should be expected to meet customer needs, maintain production services, respond to and resolve problems, and perform maintenance.
PREFERRED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following experience is highly desired:
- Experience managing complex storage environments, with parallel file systems and multiple technologies, for academic technologies or research.
- Functional knowledge of networking technologies, especially in large-scale heterogeneous storage environments. Understanding of and experience administering parallel and/or clustered file systems.
- Advanced skills in NAS and SAN environments
- Advanced knowledge of and skills with storage administration under Linux and Windows
- Multi-user Windows system administration experience
