Supranationals Analyst

The Sovereign Supranationals Ratings Group is responsible for assigning and maintaining international credit ratings of sovereign governments and their debt issues as well as most of the world’s major supranational institutions.

The Group currently maintains more than 100 public sovereign ratings and over 20 major supranationals worldwide. The group’s sovereign ratings coverage includes governments in ‘advanced’ economies such as the US, the UK, Germany and Japan as well as in ‘emerging markets’ such as China, Brazil and Russia. The group’s coverage of supranationals includes most of the world’s largest multi-lateral development banks and key pan-regional institutions such as the European Union. The group is based across four offices globally, with the teams in London and Paris covering sovereign ratings in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and the majority of the group’s supranationals coverage.  Other regional teams are based in New York and Hong Kong covering the Americas and Asia-Pacific respectively. The Global Head of the Group is based in London.

Job Description:

Based in the London office, the post-holder would report primarily to the Head of Supranationals in Paris (in respect of Supranationals coverage) and to a Regional Team Head in London (in respect of EMEA Sovereign coverage).

We are looking for an analyst with a number of years economic and financial analysis focused on supranational and sovereign entities. The primary responsibilities of the successful candidate will focus on the analysis and rating of Supranational entities in the EMEA region, but will also extend to analytical coverage of a small number of sovereign issuers. Consequently, analytical experience of both supranational and sovereign entities is essential.

The successful candidate will travel and conduct in-depth meetings with senior management at rated supranational institutions, establish working relationships with relevant officials, update databases, write credit rating reports, present credits to a rating committee and prepare reports for publication, including press releases.

He/she will also be responsible for a small portfolio of (2-3) sovereign credits in the EMEA region, and will need to organise and lead annual rating missions, establish working relationships with senior officials, update country databases and forecasts and prepare supporting research for presentation to the Sovereign Rating committee.

It is important that the candidate should be able to work independently while also being a good team player and be able to cope with time pressure and deadlines, happy to travel and experience different cultures.

Key Responsibilities:

·         Organise and lead rating visits

·         Produce credit reports and other written research

·         Initiate/originate relevant topical commentary and other research

·         Maintain a supranational database for comparative analysis as well as country databases for the sovereigns that form part of the coverage

·         Contribute to the review and update of rating criteria and related analytical discussions

·         Support Head of Supranationals and relevant Sovereign Team Head

Person Specification:

A good educational background, including strong and relevant qualifications at degree level.
Analytical experience of both supranational and sovereign entities is essential with relevant experience of bank credit analysis desirable.
Appropriate post-graduate academic or professional qualifications in economics and/or finance.
A balance of incisive numerical and analytical skills, together with an ability to speak and write concise, fluent English.
Numerate, with experience in writing reports and proficiency in Excel and Word.
Some evidence of multicultural experience would be advantageous. Excellent communication skills.
French language skills would be advantageous in the context of the Supranational coverage responsibilities.
Ability to work to tight deadlines and display a strong degree of flexibility to take on additional responsibilities, as required.
