JOB SUMMARY Switchers primarily move trailers on terminal premises and are sitting inside the truck cab or are outside in all weather conditions throughout their shift. Switchers frequently climb in and out of equipment and walk or stand on concrete surfaces. They perform such tasks as hooking and unhooking trailers, connecting air hoses and electrical lines, fueling equipment, installing or removing tire chains, and manually cranking dolly wheels. A Switcher is required to follow appropriate safety procedures. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES A switcher job is considered very heavy work. Switchers frequently lift and carry objects weighing 50 pounds or more and may lift or move items in excess of 100 pounds. They work out of doors in any weather and are subject to external conditions of temperature and wind. Switchers may be exposed to petroleum based products such as oil, gasoline, and/or grease, during fueling or safety inspections.
