Description

Responsible for initial reviews of tax provisions and related tax returns for regulated investment companies and investment partnerships. Performs first level, detailed review of 1) tax year-end provisions, 2) financial statement footnotes and related disclosures, 3) federal and state income tax returns, 4) excise tax distribution calculations and federal excise tax returns, 5) year-end fund-level shareholder reporting information, 6) partnership tax provisions, partner tax allocations, and income tax returns and Schedule K-1s for investment partnerships. Assists in coordinating with external auditors/tax personnel to insure that the aforementioned deliverables are complete, accurate, and timely prepared and filed. Assists in the design, implementation, and coordination of appropriate staff training. Remains abreast of current tax issues affecting the investment management industry. Interacts with fund accounting to stay abreast of fund operations, and assists in providing tax analysis where appropriate. Solid knowledge of accounting and general tax principles (e.g., book income vs. taxable income) pertaining to regulated investment companies/investment partnerships. Works with Tax Department Managers to resolve identified tax issues. Keeps abreast of industry developments and applicable tax law changes. Writes reports and/or correspondence, where examples of format may exist, but not content. Documents technical results and/or procedures with minimal direction. Handles day-to-day assignments promptly, efficiently and courteously. Develops staff members through technical training. Directs staff to ensure that tasks are timely completed and deliverable date(s) are met. Communicates issues promptly both upward and downward; follows up on open items to ensure the successful completion of the task at hand. Decisions impact project completion. Applies knowledge to determine solutions to complex problems with minimal direction. Performs more complex tax research and planning on specific tax issues. Follows instructions with minimal reiteration. Presents questions and/or issues concisely and accurately. Works well within a group setting. Understands the dynamics of a team environment. Begins to develop leadership skills. Continues to develop contacts within BNYM, and begins to develop contacts with clients and external audit firms. Shows respect and professionalism toward co-workers and superiors.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA, MBA and MST (or progress towards) preferred. 3-5 years tax/5-7 years industry. RIC Tax preferred.
