Trainee Sugar Merchant
The successful candidate will benefit from learning all aspects of sugar trading in the East Africa region from our highly successful, expert team, and joint venture partners. You will support the General Manager in all aspects of developing the domestic market for our Kilombero sugar brand to optimise revenue and trade flow.
To be considered for this the role you will need to have 2-3 years of commercial experience and be familiar with the East Africa region. This is a highly commercial trainee position with significant opportunities for career development. 50% of Tanzania’s domestic sugar is handled by the Kilombero Sugar Company and you will be expected to make a significant contribution in a hands-on role from day one.

EDF Man are one of the world’s leading providers of sugar. We buy both raw and white sugar directly from origin countries for sale to final consumers and industrial users, wholesalers and refineries. We operate in over 40 countries around the world.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the General Manager in the following activities.
- Manage the sales process for the entire production of Kilombero Sugars within the domestic Tanzanian market.
- Maintain sales to existing clients whilst continually seeking opportunities for new business.
- Manage and motivate a small marketing team.
- Handle the marketing and pricing strategies of the sugar production to maximise revenue.
- Develop strategies for adding value and identify areas for improvement
- Optimise the supply and logistics model to minimise costs and maximise results.
- Prepare and deliver monthly and ad hoc sales reports to the board.
- Maintain relationships with key customers as well as developing new industry contacts for Kilombero sugar.
- Support the open liaison between Government agencies, industry bodies and growers’ associations.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
- You will have first-hand knowledge and experience of the East Africa, and ideally Tanzania, region.
- You will have 2-3 years of commercial experience, preferably gained within soft commodities, in a Merchant or Sales role.
- High calibre degree in a relevant subject.
- You will enjoy and relish in the development of strong customer relationships.
- A capable oral and written communicator who effectively builds relationships.
- Strong commercial acumen and analytical skills.
- Flexible and adaptable; eager to learn and thoroughly understand the sugar industry, able to adjust to change quickly and keen to take on new challenges.
- Self-confidence, with the ability to voice opinions constructively.
- Entrepreneurial spirit; generates ideas for business improvements and is able to implement them.
- Strong emphasis on performance; sets high standards, goal orientated, ambitious and able to maintain performance under pressure.
- Determined and resilient with a desire to make a long term contribution to EDF Man’s business.
- A passion for travel as well as the ability to undertake regular visits around Tanzania to outlying markets.
- Excellent business English. Local languages would be advantageous also.

Kilombero Sugar Company (KSC)
KSC is owned 75% by Kilombero Holdings Limited (73.3% Illovo Sugar Ltd, 26.7% EDF Man) and 25% by the Government of Tanzania
Kilombero Sugar Distributors (KSD)
EDF Man markets all KSC production through Kilombero Sugar Distributors (KSD) and owns 80% of the equity (Illovo 20%) of that distribution company.
