UNIX Systems Administrator Duration: 6months to perm Location: Arlington, VA Rate: Competitive Start: ASAP Required: Basic Qualifications 1. Familiarity with UNIX and its commands/utilities at the user level including experience with at least 2 shells. 2. Can perform standard file processing tasks; find, move, remove, redirection. 3. Familiar with most basic system administration tools and tasks. For example, can cleanly boot and shutdown the system, add and remove user accounts, use backup programs, perform fsck and maintain system database files (groups, hosts, aliases, etc.) 4. Provision new servers * both physical and virtual. 5. Can troubleshoot performance issues on a UNIX server. 6. Fundamental understanding of the patching process. This includes applying security patches and kernel patches. 7. Fundamental understanding of the functioning of the UNIX operating system. 8. Add new storage devices to the system, and ensure they are correctly configured for the systems use. 9. Very comfortable with most aspects of the UNIX operating system. 10. Familiar with fundamental networking/distributed computing environments and concepts. Can configure NFS and NIS, use nslookup or research to check information in the DNS. 11. Able to write detailed scripts in at least one, preferably two administrative languages, (shell scripts, Perl, Tk). 12. Install and configure COTs packages on the system. 13. Able to perform at least minimal debugging and modification of shell/Perl programs. 14. Able to perform most security audits, and protect the system against intrusion. Desired: Skills 1.
