MANDATE
Primary accountability is to support a consistent approach across BMO Canada with respect to workplace accommodations for employees with disabilities, beginning with the on boarding process and continuing throughout an employee’s career. As the centre of expertise for workplace accommodation, this role will lead in evolving BMO's approach to accommodation from reactive to proactive, including the development of solutions to systemic and individual accommodation needs, supporting the building of awareness and organizational knowledge on the subject of workplace accommodation and taking steps to proactively address needs. This role will act as the 'point of contact' for employees and managers for issues relating to the workplace accommodation of employees with disabilities - providing consultation and support: - assisting with the needs assessment process, the identification and validation of requirements and solutions, and the implementation of physical, technical and learning accommodation of BMO employees.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
As the centre of expertise for workplace accommodation at BMO, the incumbent provides advice, and helps execute a full range of accommodation solutions including, physical, technical, learning as well as other needs that may arise such as modifying job responsibilities/mandated tasks.
- Facilitates the successful implementation of accommodations by addressing issues of job and performance expectations, coaching managers and employees and escalating performance issues to Employee Relations when appropriate.
- Works in partnership with managers to support employees with workplace accommodation needs, arranging/interpreting disability assessments, in securing accommodations, ensuring timely execution of recommendations and undertaking follow-up to ensure accommodation needs have been met.
- Works in partnership with external service providers, as well as internal partners, to ensure identified accommodation requirements are addressed, solutions are validated and prioritized, and implementation is supported through to execution.
- Leads in the identification of external and internal providers to develop efficient and effective solutions based on disability / needs, enabling a proactive approach to workplace accommodation requirements.
- Identifies current barriers encountered in the accommodation process, determines action plan to resolve and together with partners, undertakes steps to achieve resolution
- Supports BMO's Recruitment and Intake activities related to the portfolio of people with disability new hires and provides collaborative support for managers engaged in intake programs.
- Provides ongoing monitoring of accommodations.
- Participates in and contributes to building awareness and capabilities, as well as BMO communications on the subject of, and subjects related to, accommodation.
- Provides input into strategies and policies related to Diversity, Employment Equity and accommodation.
Knowledge Skills: KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge:
- 5-7 years of human resources experience with strong knowledge of workplace equity/diversity issues and Canadian employment equity and human rights legislation.
- Broad knowledge of disabilities as they relate to employment
- Strong knowledge of accommodation issues, including technology requirements and workplace issues
- Strong knowledge of and connection with the community of people with disabilities, agencies and vendors who support this community
- Broad understanding of diverse audiences, communities and markets
- Knowledge of BMO and its operations
Skills:
- Demonstrated flexibility and resourcefulness in handling/resolving problems/ issues/ situations.
- Proven ability to prioritize, organize and work under pressure both independently and in a team environment.
- Strong influencing skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with individuals at a range of levels both inside and outside the organization
