Automotive Mechanic - Potential Contract
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS FOR A POTENTIAL CONTRACT. AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC TWENTY-NINE PALMS, CA This position will perform services for the CMA, MAGTFTC, MCAGCC, Twenty-Nine Palms, California. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Performs a variety of minor repairs and services to maintain motor vehicles. The Contractor places and maintains decals on vehicles; checks and replaces batteries; rotates, repairs, and replaces tires; washes, polishes, and cleans interiors and exteriors of vehicles; drains, flushes, and replaces engine, transmission, and differential grease and oils; checks, cleans, calibrates, and replaces spark plugs; cleans and replaces oil and air filters. The Automotive Mechanic adjusts brakes; replaces windshield wipers and similar minor parts; assists on major overhaul jobs by disassembling and cleaning parts; repairing components such as generators and water pumps; replacing thermostats, points, electrical wiring and other items; maintains tools and equipment, and cleans work areas. Repairs, rebuilds, or overhauls major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks or tractors. Work involves most of the following: Diagnosing the source of trouble and determining the extent of repairs required; replacing worn or broken parts such as piston rings, bearings, or other engine parts; grinding and adjusting valves; rebuilding carburetors; overhauling transmissions; and repairing fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems. In general, the work of the Motor Vehicle Mechanic requires rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent. Repairs damaged bodies and body parts of automotive vehicles, such as automobiles, buses, and light trucks according to repair manuals, using hand tools and power tools, removes upholstery, accessories, electrical and hydraulic window, seat-operating equipment, and trim to gain access to vehicle body and fender, positions block against surface of dented area and beats opposite surface to remove dents using hammer and fills depressions with solder or other plastic material. This worker removes damaged fenders, panels, and grills, using wrenches and cutting torch and bolts or welds replacement, straightens bent frames, using hydraulic jack and pulling device, files, grinds and sands repaired surfaces, using power tools and hand tools. Refinishes repaired surface, using paint spray gun and sander, aims headlights and aligns wheels. Repairs damaged fiberglass automobile bodies using pneumatic tools and knowledge of fiberglass repair techniques, cuts away damaged fiberglass, using air grinder, smoothes edges of painted surface using sandpaper or air-powered sander, masks surrounding undamaged surface, using masking tape, cuts plastic separating film using shears and tapes film to outside repair area. The Automobile Body Repairer mixes polyester resin and hardener according to specifications and applies mixture to repair area, soaks matting in resin mixture and layers matting over repair area to specified thickness, peels separating film from repair area and washes surface with water, occasionally secures new panel to repair area using C-clamp. The Repairer applies and spreads body filler manually to reestablish surface. The Repairer also manually files away excess filler to match original contour, smoothes filler, using air sander, and cleans repair area with air gun. Tests, repairs, overhauls, modifies, and maintains electrical equipment of a specialized nature such as automatic alternator synchronizing equipment, amplifying control units, voltage regulating equipment, generators, switching and control panels, and junction boxes in motor vehicles such as automobiles, buses and trucks. Removes, disassembles repairs, cleans, treats for corrosion, assembles and reinstalls components and accessories, stencils and marks equipment in accordance with technical publications, stores, handles, labels, uses, and disposes of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with all state, local and federal environmental standards and regulations, operates, cleans, inspects, and services MHE towing vehicles; maintains vehicle records, maintains and updates paper and electronic equipment records, provides dispatch service for MHE, and practices good housekeeping, tool control, Foreign Object Damage prevention and safety at all times. Receives, stores, and issues hand tools, machine tools, dies, replacement parts, shop supplies and equipment, such as measuring devices in an industrial establishment. The Contractor also keeps records of tools issued to and returned by workers, searches for lost or misplaced tools, prepares periodic inventory or keeps perpetual inventory and requisitions stock as needed, unpacks and stores new equipment; visually inspects tools or measures with micrometer for wear or defects and reports damaged or worn-out equipment to superiors; may coat tools with grease or other preservative, using a brush or spray gun, and may attach identification tags or engrave identifying information on tools and equipment using electric marking tool. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION Must be a U.S. Citizen Must be able to meet and maintain all requirements of this contract/task including having the following MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS A minimum of 10 years experience and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Must have in depth knowledge of principles of small diesel engines and related components and systems. Must have an understanding of the principles of operation of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems adequate to trouble shoot systems, diagnose problems, and repair and rebuild components of equipment supported. Must have an understanding of test equipment and procedures and the ability to use full range of hand and power-tool equipment. Must be skilled in the use of repair manuals, parts catalogs, requisitioning and shop control procedures, gauges, meters and other test equipment. Must have knowledge and experience in the safe and efficient operation of power tools (i.e., drill press and grinders, air compressors and radial saws). In depth knowledge of the mechanic and woodworking trades and skill in using the equipment of those trades such as multimeters, torque wrenches, various saws, drills, routers, shapers, diesel generators, air compressors and all of the common hand tools. Required to do considerable standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, stretching, etc. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds, but on occasion, may be required to lift and carry items in excess of 50 pounds. Work a considerable portion of time out-of-doors in all types of weather (including temperature extremes), and is subject to injury from the use of a variety of tools, as well as, wet working surfaces. Employee is also subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds, as well as exposure to dirt, dust, bad smelling fumes, broken bones, scrapes, burns, infections, cuts, bruises and electrical shock. Employee may be required to work around heavy equipment in all types of weather. Incumbent is exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment failure and is subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt and fumes from the motor and exhaust. Employee is required to wear appropriate PPDs that may be heavy and uncomfortable.
